Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) uses powerful magnets and radiofrequency waves to produce detailed, high contrast images of the inside of your body. Unlike X-ray or CT, MRI uses no ionising radiation whatsoever making it the imaging modality of choice for situations where detailed, repeated, or sensitive imaging is needed.
Inside the MRI scanner, a strong magnetic field causes hydrogen atoms (which are abundant in water and fat throughout the body) to align. When a brief radiofrequency pulse is applied, these atoms release energy as they return to alignment. Different tissues release this energy at different rates and the scanner detects these differences to build extraordinarily detailed cross-sectional images of organs, soft tissue, bone marrow, blood vessels, and more.
The result is imaging capability that X-ray and CT simply cannot replicate, particularly for the brain and nervous system, spinal cord, joints, tendons, abdominal organs, and pelvic structures.
Our Gisborne clinic is home to our brand new 3T Siemens Magnetom Lumina. Our scanner is fully licensed, so we are able to offer bulk billed MRI scans to our patients.
