What Is a DEXA Scan?

DEXA stands for Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry, is the internationally recognised gold standard for measuring bone mineral density (BMD). It is the most accurate, reliable, and widely used method for diagnosing osteoporosis and osteopenia, and for monitoring how bones respond to treatment over time.

The scan uses two extremely low-energy X-ray beams directed at specific areas of the skeleton. By measuring how much energy is absorbed by bone versus soft tissue, the DEXA machine calculates bone density with exceptional precision. The radiation dose involved is exceptionally low and roughly equivalent to a few hours of natural background radiation, and far less than a standard chest X-ray.

At Matrix Medical Imaging, DEXA scans are performed at our (Cairnlea, Craigieburn, Fawkner, Frankston, Gisborne, Glenroy, Lalor & Melton). The examination typically focuses on the hip, lumbar spine (lower back), and wrist and the three skeletal sites most vulnerable to osteoporotic fracture and most informative for diagnosing and monitoring bone health.
