Yes, a referral from a GP or specialist is required for all CT examinations. Medicare benefits are only claimable with a valid referral. If you don't have one, please see your doctor first.

Most CT examinations can be performed as a walk-in service. However, some scans are particularly abdominal studies which require contrast and a doctor to be present, so these do require a booked appointment. Call ahead and we'll let you know if your specific scan needs pre-booking.

Your CT images are reviewed and reported by our radiologists. Reports are sent directly to your referring doctor, usually within 24–48 hours for routine studies. Urgent or emergency results are communicated to your doctor immediately. Your doctor will then discuss the findings with you.

Most CT scans take between 10 and 30 minutes in total, including preparation time. The actual scanning portion is very fast & often less than a minute. More complex studies such as CT angiography may take a little longer.

Many CT examinations performed at Matrix Medical Imaging are eligible for Medicare bulk billing. Eligibility depends on the type of scan and your referral. Please contact your nearest clinic to confirm bulk billing for your specific examination.

For most CT scans, no fasting is needed. However, if your scan requires contrast, you may be asked to fast for 4 hours beforehand. Staying well hydrated with water is always encouraged. Our team will provide specific preparation instructions when you book your appointment.

Wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing without metal zips, underwires, or fastenings in the area being scanned. You will be asked to remove jewellery, piercings, and any metal objects. A gown may be provided if needed. Leave valuables at home where possible.
