What Is a Fibroscan?

Fibroscan is the trade name for a technique called transient elastography, a specialised, non-invasive ultrasound based test that measures the health of your liver without the need for a surgical biopsy. In a single short scan, it captures two separate measurements: how stiff your liver tissue is (which reflects scarring, or fibrosis) and how much fat is present within it (which reflects fatty liver disease, or steatosis).

Unlike a conventional ultrasound, the Fibroscan probe delivers a small, painless mechanical vibration into the liver and uses ultrasound to track how quickly that vibration travels through the tissue. Stiffer, more scarred liver transmits the pulse faster than healthy, elastic liver tissue and allowing us to estimate the degree of fibrosis. At the same time, the machine analyses how the ultrasound signal is attenuated (weakened) as it passes through the liver, which indicates how much fat has accumulated.

"Your health, your wellbeing - Matrix Medical Imaging puts people first."

At Matrix Medical Imaging, Fibroscan is available at our Fawkner, Glenroy and Lalor clinics. The scan itself takes around 10 to 15 minutes, and unlike many liver investigations, results are generated instantly on-screen and then reviewed and formally reported by our radiologist.

An appointment is required. Please call your preferred clinic and our staff will book you in and advise on the short fasting period needed before your visit.
